Efforts Pay Off with Decreasing CLBSI Rates

Decreasing central line bloodstream infections (CLBSI) has been a clinical focus for years and numerous initiatives have been implemented in various units to achieve dramatic decreases in this quality measure. These include sharing data with staff to keep them informed of progress, including central line protocols as part of annual competencies and switching to disposable cardiac leads among other unit-based activities.

"Because we continue to focus on this important quality indicator, in fiscal year 2010 we saw our efforts result in an overall decrease in CLBSI rates," said Judy Doty, RN, MSN, manager of Nursing Quality.

The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit-Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (PICU-CICU) saw enormously significant results with zero infections in each quarter of fiscal year 2010.

"While we are enthusiastic about our CLBSI across the board, the outcome of the PICU-CICU's efforts are especially exciting and deserve recognition," Doty said.
